Acey Earth Day: Eco-Friendly Clothing Care

Line Drying your Laundry. Photo by Dmitry Arslanov.

While we try to take an environmentally friendly approach towards our clothing 365 days a year, Earth Day is a perfect time to reflect on how to fine-tune clothing care.

This April 22nd, remember: Repair, Reuse, and Recycle to make your best-loved pieces last a lifetime. Extending the same care that goes into producing our pieces to their time in your closet can make a big difference.

Making small changes to your routine on laundry day can prolong the life of your clothes and greatly reduce your energy consumption. Read on for our Acey Woman's Guide to Eco-Friendly Clothing Care.

Choose your tools wisely. When you wash, take care to use an eco-friendly detergent like Collective's fabric wash. Nontoxic, biodegradable, and produced in the United Kingdom.

Let nature do the drying for you. Tumble drying is the most energy-intensive part of most laundry routines and can damage clothing over time. The longer, sunnier days of spring and summer are perfect for air-drying. In addition to saving energy, the sun's UV rays kill leftover bacteria on your well-loved t-shirts and favourite delicates.

If you need to call in the experts, find a dry-cleaner who cares. Eco-friendly cleaning services are available in most major cities, avoiding the polluting chemicals used in traditional dry-cleaning. Look out for:

Who do you trust to help take care of your clothes? Send us your favourite cleaning, mending and alterations specialists to hello@the-acey.com and we'll share them with other Acey Women.

Mind your mending. Rather than hiding away repairs and patches, show them off as a history of your life in clothes. Try using the Japanese technique of sashiko to reinforce and repair your denim. Find more stitching inspiration at Sri Threads.

Recycle: Give your old clothes new life with The Acey and Traid. Fill any package, box, or bag with unwanted clothing items. Paste on this Freepost Label and bring the bag or box to your local post office to donate. Your pieces will go to Traid's charity shops around London. All money raised at these shops goes to fund international development projects improving working conditions and practices in the textile industry.
