ACEY: Marina, you have lived, learnt, and worked in New York, London, and Paris. How have your international experiences influenced you, and what makes New York the right home for Svilu?
MP: My love of fashion was ignited in Paris, and I learned how to channel this passion into a profession during my time at Central St Martin’s in London. New York is the perfect place to start a label, however: It’s impossible not to be inspired by the huge humming energy of the city, and the garment district here is an invaluable resource.
ACEY: From working for huge brands such as Prada and Tommy Hilfiger, Britt, what lessons have you learnt, that you’re now applying the knowledge from to Svilu?
BC: The lesson of hard work! The incredibly successful brands I’ve worked with in the past have become so thanks to staying true to the brands’ DNA and ethos at every step. I learned to fearlessly follow your intuition even when it might not seem to be the obvious choice- taking risks can pay off.
ACEY: Since establishing a brand that embodies mindful manufacturing processes has your lifestyle changed in any other ways?
MP: It has made us more aware of how and where things are made in a broader sense- from food to cosmetics to furniture. It’s encouraging to see a collective move toward transparency.
ACEY: The concept of ‘Thoughtful Design’ could sometimes be seen as subjective. What does it mean to you?
MP: For us, the meaning of ‘thoughtful design’ is threefold, and encompasses everything from the fabrics our clothes are made of, to the place and people who put them together, right down to their timeless wear ability.
Every fibre of every fabric is specifically selected to reduce environmental impact. We take just as much care when selecting fair factories, 90% of which are right here in New York. We visit almost daily, and really get to know who’s creating the collections. We strive to create clothes with timeless stylistic sensibilities, that become ‘best friend’ pieces, worn for years to come.
ACEY: It seems like you’re going from strength to strength. What’s next for Svilu?
MP: Finding the latest sustainable fabrics and techniques excites us. We continue to grow, and see challenges not as limitations, but as a framework for creating creative solutions. It’s so encouraging to now see a collective trend, through everything from food, to cosmetics, to furniture, towards transparency. For Spring 15 we can’t wait to introduce for the first time a collection of custom designed prints on organic cottons, ranging from feminine voiles to tailored suiting.
